Dragons Get Vital Win Over Harleysville

The Haverford Dragons got a total team performance, including timely intervention from goal keeper John Kuyat Saturday to stop their three-match slide and record a much-needed win against Harleysville FC, 2-1.

As he has done all season, Danny Lyons proved hard for the Harleysville defense to handle, scoring yet another goal, but the pivotal play came on an aggressive attacking move by forward Patrick McCallum, who netted the match winner.

About 10 minutes from full time, Lyons unleashed a hard, low shot to the Harleysville keeper's right. He got to the shot, but the Harleysville keeper bundled the ball, and McCallum — who followed the shot with a well-timed run — slide on to the loose ball to pop it over the line.

It was a crucial goal.

The Dragons had been out hustled for siginificant portions of the match up to that point. But when it counted, they found a way to edge in front of the visitors.

Haverford Gains Edge In Tight Contest

Lyons had given Haverford the lead in the first half, only to see Harleysville erase that advantage from the penalty spot. A frantic serious of events in the Haverford penalty area resulted in a hand ball against the Dragons when Kuyat found himself far off his line.

Kuyat had rushed out to meet a Harleysville attacker who had broken throught the back line, but when he could only partially save the shot, the ball fell in a dangerous position about 12 yards out from goal.

Despite the frenetic period which led to a penalty, Kuyat contined his brave keeping, and made several sliding saves the remainder of the match.

Once they had drawn level, Harleysville started to play with more aggression, and they used a size advantage to muscle Haverford off the ball at times.

The Dragons relied on the skills and composure of its midfield and back line players to stem the tide of Harleysville's assault.

Dragons' Team Effort Seals Victory

One player who contributed in every area of the pitch was Ryan Kelley. Kelley dispossessed Harleysville players in the defensive third and made several sparkling runs into the attacking third.

On one particular play, Kelley took the ball from his own 18 yard line all the way down the right touchline into the corner, before crossing a perfectly weighted cross to the far post.

Unfortunately, no Dragon was on hand to receive Kelley's brilliant service.

Willie Fineberg patroled the back line with an special determination, and his timely intervention in the closing moments of the match halted Harleysville's advance in what was developing as a clear goal scoring opportunity.

Tireless as always, Peter Moore, Sean O'Connell and Noah Cordrey came to Fineberg's assistance. Ryan Brown, Kevin Toal andNoah Egelkamp kept things moving in midfield.

Lights Out As Lower Merion Beat Haverford

Lower Merion Rage put the lights out on the Haverford Dragons Saturday as they scored two goals and controlled most of the action before the match had to be abandoned due to darkness.

With 15 minutes remaining in a 2-nil match in which the Dragons rarely threatened, the match was called because the stadium lights failed to come on.

The form which the Dragons showed early in the season with wins over Hockessin and Coventry, as well as in their performance earning a draw from two goals down on the road to Pottsgrove, was evident only in faint glimpses Saturday.

Meanwhile, goalkeeper John Kuyat was kept plenty busy.

Haverford surrendered the game's first goal 22 minutes into the match, before they had really made any significant advances toward the Lower Merion goal.

Haverford Struggle To Find Winning Form

A lofted ball from the left side caught Kuyat out slightly, and when it glanced off the underside of the crossbar, any hopes Haverford had that the ball might come back out without crossing the goal line were dashed when it landed in the inside netting.

Going down a goal gave Haverford a sense of urgency, and they responded with a fine build up which resulted in a shot by Danny Lyons sailing just wide.

Lyons had been put in on goal through creative playmaking which was initiated by Ryan Brown in the central midfield. Brown carried the ball forward and then slotted a nice pass to Patrick McCallum along the left side, before McCallum sent Lyons in.

It was a nice signal of possible intent by the Dragons, but Lower Merion took it to heart and started increasing their level of play. No sooner had the ball been put back into play following Lyons' miss, than Kuyat made a sliding save on a breakaway which Lower Merion had fashioned.

Darkness Descends, Dragons Drop Points

The close of the first half saw a few inviting chances for Haverford go uncapitalized upon.

Thomas Lovelace fired narrowly high and wide from an acute angle on the right side in the 34th minute, and then on the stroke of halftime Willie Fineberg's direct kick from 40 yards out was saved on the hop before the Dragons' forwards could make the most of the opportunity.

When Lower Merion doubled their advantage in the 39th minute, it clearly took wind out of the Dragons' sails.

Trouble on the back line led to confusion with Kuyat and his defenders. The loose ball was easily deposite into the gaping net by the Lower Merion forward on hand.

The next 15 minutes saw continued pressue my Lower Merion and more retreating from Haverford. The match was called in the 55th minute as darkness descended fully.

Haverford Best Coventry, Stay Unbeaten

The Haverford Dragons made it through the first two weekends of the season unbeaten, riding the prolific goal scoring of Danny Lyons and getting timely goal keeping from John Kuyat, as they took all three points from Coventry on Sunday.

Lyons has four goals in just three matches played, and Kuyat was on form to make crucial stops in the late stages against Coventry as Haverford clung to their narrow 2-1 lead.

Despite enjoying a size advantage against Haverford, Coventry was not sharp with their passing, and they quickly gave the ball away in the first 30 seconds of the match.

The ensuing throw in for the Dragons resulted in a good scoring chance and Haverford quickly found itself with a direct kick from 19 yards.

Lyons Strikes Again, Dragons Score First

Lyons, whose touch was golden the day before against Pottsgrove, saw his ambitious effort sail just over the crossbar. But it was a sign of things to come, as the Dragons forward was keen to keep his scoring average up.

There was a sense early on that he would find the back of the net before the match was through.

Haverford's midfield was linking will with Lyons and Noah Egelkamp, creating decent opportunities. Egelkamp made a fine run down the right side after he had been sent through courtesy a diagonal ball from Ryan Brown in the fifth minute.

The pressure told in the ninth minute when Lyons hit a shot from distance which caught the coventry keeper completely unaware. Egelkamp again was involved, as was Patrick McCallum.

A loose ball, bouncing on the less-than-ideal pitch, was causing problems for the Coventry defense. When they could not control the ball, Lyons stepped up to fire a rising shot into the far corner just below the crossbar.

Haverford's 2 Quick Goals Give Confidence

Coventry had a few players who could send long throwins to the center of the box, and in the 11th minute they threatened on just such a play. Willie Finberg, playing in a new, central defending position, stepped forward to make the block that was needed and clear the danger.

But it was the Dragons who struck next. McCallum sent Lyons in on the left side with a long ball deep. Lyons out ran and outmuscled his marker, but saw his shot with the outside of his right foot sail wide.

Coventry's keeper had already committed, however, so then Brown reached the ball at the far post, a tap was all that was required to double Haverford's advantage in the 15th minute.

The remainder of the first half was a back-and-forth affair, with the Dragons creating chances, and Coventry getting a few of their own as well.

In the opening minutes of the second half, Kuyat was pressed into service, as a Coventry counterattack created a great scoring chance on the left side. Kuyat made himself large and got a leg on the shot, and then Haverford dealt calmly with the ensuing corner kick.

Coventry Get 1 Back, But Dragons Hold On

Ryan Kelley was active in the midfield, creating chances for Lyons and Kevin Toal, the latter having a free header threaten the Coventry keeper only to be ruled offside anyway.

Toal was a force to be reckoned with in the offensive third and the defensive third throughout the day. Also holding a firm line was Sean Kauffman, who showed again why he is vital to Haverford's cause.

It was in the 56th minute, however, that Coventry got a lifeline with a goal that set up the final 14 minutes of the match as a nerve jangling ride. Coventry, predictably, took the momentum with their goal, as Haverford looked as though they had let up on the accelerator somewhat.

Pouring men forward, Coventry got a great chance just three minutes after they had tallied, only for Fineberg, and Noah Cordrey to make certain with clearances out of the box. Cordrey, who played numerous positions on the pitch throughout the match, kept his head and denied Coventry a shot.

It looked as though the Dragons would put the match beyond question in the 70th minute, as Brown took a direct from the right side of goal about 25 yards out, but Haverford were unable to capitalize on the situation even as the ball sailed right through the Coventry keeper's hands.

The ball was wide, and with no Dragon on hand at the far post to poke it in, Haverford were forced to rely on the official's whistle to call time on the match, which happened shortly thereafter.

Dragons Salvage Point, Remain Unbeaten

The Haverford Dragons showed their fighting spirit Saturday as they clawed their way back in to a match which looked like it was going to get away from them to grab a point on the road with a 2-2 draw away to Pottsgrove.

Pottsgrove, Haverford and Coventry sat together at the top of the table after the first week of matches, with two wins.

Early on Saturday it didn't look good for the Dragons as they went down 2-nil in the opening 28 minutes. Mostly it was the result of Haverford's slow start to the match.

Although Haverford had a few chances through the work of Danny Lyons and Thomas Lovelace, who provided the goals last week against Hockessin, the play was being largely dictated by Pottsgrove.

Haverford Find Themselves Down Early

Goalkeeper John Kuyat was active early, showing the necessary initiative to quell Pottsgrove's many forays into the box. Kuyat went to ground with regularity and came off his line to take charge.

But there was litte Kuyat could do on the two tallies the Dragons conceded. In particular, on the first goal, he was overrun by a quick Pottsgrove burst into the attacking third along the right side, which ended with an easy tap in at the far post.

The second half started more promisingly for Haverford and within four minutes they had earned their first corner kick. Lyons was high and wide with the resulting shot, but it was a signal of intent from the Dragons forward.

Three minutes following his miss, Lyons was right on target from the left side as he caught the Pottsgrove keeper off his line and netted his second goal of the young season — this time from distance.

Fit-again Patrick McCallum was also causing trouble with his speed.

Dragons' Comeback Puts Match On Edge

Lyons was starting to find his game, and he created another opportunity for himself in the 48th minute when he dragged a strong right-footed effort wide.

It was in the 56th minute that the scores were levelled, again by Lyons, who was putting more and more pressure on the Pottsgrove back line.

The final 14 minutes were edge-of-the-seat material, as Pottsgrove sought to re-establish their lead, and Haverford was riding the wave of momentum and creating plenty of chances to snatch an improbable victory.

Noah Egelkamp put Lyons in on goal with a great ball served in from the left side, only to have the Pottsgrove keeper slide and cover in the nick of time.

Moments later Lovelace nearly got on the scoresheet from the right side.

Haverford Hold Off Pottsgrove Late On

The center of defense, under the charge of Willie Fineberg, Sean O'Connell and Sean Kauffman was stalwart, and the Dragons made sure to defend in depth when Pottsgrove pushed forward. Ryan Kelley and Kevin Toal were tireless as well.

In the 64th minute it looked as though Haverford would put out a victory. The Pottsgrove keeper handled the ball just outside the area and Lyons stepped forward to take the kick.

Lyons was denied his hat trick by a brilliant diving save by the Pottsgrove keeper who covered well to his left. Unable to control the rebound, the ball fell invitingly to Lovelace who was unlucky to have mised his opportunity.

Lovelace got yet another bite at the apple only to have his next effort ricohet off the post. The Dragons looked like they would surely achieve the breakthrough, but in the end it was honors even, with Coventry waiting on Sunday.

Haverford Start 2010 On The Good Foot

It turned out to be a profitable weekend for the Haverford Dragons as a solid performance on Saturday earned the club a deserved 2-nil victory over Hockessin Lightning of Delaware, and a forfeit by Sunday's originally scheduled opponent, Central Delaware Soccer, means Haverford are off to a 2-0 start on the season.

It had been a close season notable for its many changes and last-minute adjustments, but the Haverford Dragons on Saturday got off on the right foot as they handed their new coach, George Severini, a victory away to Hockessin Lightning which could have been even more emphatic than the 2-nil score.

It was Hockessin whom the Dragons hosted in the opening match of the 2009 season, playing to a draw. In that match Haverford were denied victory by both the woodwork and stingy goalkeeping.

A year later and the team is greatly changed. Haverford are still adjusting to a new coach and the loss of four starters who played pivotal roles in the team's successes of 2008 and 2009.

But perhaps the Dragons felt oddly at home on Hockessin's turf, recalling memories of a convincing win in 2006 en route to their perfect season.

Dragons Look For, Find Team Chemistry

Early on against Hockessin Saturday, the Dragons looked as though they might be suffering from a lack of cohesion as they looked to develop rhythm and communication as a unit.

As Haverford began to settle in to the pace of the match, they began building well with a passing game which capitalized on playing the ball both wide and through the middle of the park.

Yet the finishing touch was lacking. The Hockessin keeper also showed his bravery with a number of alert diving saves.

Danny Lyons, playing as a central striker, found out just how willing the Hockessin shot stopper was to sacrifice his body when, in the 14th minute the two collided just inside the 18 yard line.

Haverford Put Hockessin Under Pressure

Lyons went sailing through the air, but the Hockessin man got the ball and kept Haverford off the scoresheet.

In fact, the Dragons had numerous opportunities througout the first half, with Lyons nearly scoring several times, along with Thomas Lovelace, Noah Egelkamp, Noah Cordrey, Ryan Kelley and Ryan Brown each coming close.

But Haverford found that first tally elusive until the opening moments of the second session.

In the 39th minute, Lovelace opened the Dragons' scoring with a fine left-footed chip over the Hockessin keeper who had come off his line to deny the Haverford forward after he was sent through with a well-weighted ball from Lyons.

After First Goal, Dragons Assert Themselves

That first goal opened things up a bit for the Dragons, and they started playing more creatively. The midfield inventiveness of Kevin Toal, Brown and Cordrey, continued to provide more chances as the second half unfolded.

Haverford goalkeeper John Kuyat had a relatively slow day at his end, but did have to be alert a couple of times with the score 1-nil, as Hockessin showed its fighting spirit.

The dending along the back line was stellar, as Kelley, Sean O'Connell, Peter Moore and Sean Kauffman were relentless in shutting down Hockessin's best attempts.

Ever composed, Kuyat also benefitted from a lack of finishing by the Delaware outfit when one of Hockessin's forwards shot well over the bar from close range with the goal gaping.

Lyons' Insurance Goal Secures Opening Win

Shortly thereafter, in the 51st minute, Lyons provided breathing space for the visitors when he finished cleanly from the left side after rounding his man to move in all alone on goal.

The Hockessin keeper charged off his line, but had no answer for the calm, cool shot, which Lyons unleashed into the far corner of the goal.

Lyons nearly had a second four minutes later when he again had the beating of the Lightning central defender and found himself in on the left side. The angle was against him, however, so Lyons spun round to fire a right-footed shot which glanced off the crossbar and out of play.

In the end the two goals the Dragons scored were plenty, and the victory was made all the sweeter by the news at the close of the match that Central Delaware had been forced to forfeit the following day's match.

Haverford Start 2010 Season On The Road

The Haverford Dragons will start the Fall 2010 season on the road against familiar rival Hockessin of Delaware.

The following day Haverford will again travel to Delaware to face the Mutiny of the Central Delaware Soccer Association.

In fact they face a difficult challenge straightaway, as team's first four matches are away, and the first six are slated to be played in three successive weekends featuring back-to-back matches.

Haverford face cross-town rivals Lower Merion Rage on Oct. 2 at home, and host TEYSA Warriors _ the team they beat in the Delco Div. 3 Championship Final in 2006 _ on the final match of the season, Nov.6.

Lyons Leads Dragons To Victory

The Haverford Dragons, playing without a substitute for most of the match, put in a stellar team effort and an inspired performance from center forward Danny Lyons, as they pulled out a victory at the death.

It was Lyons who scored a brace and set up Noah Egelkamp's winner, generally making himself a menace to the Chester Valley Vipers' defense.

He nearly got his hat trick also.

The Dragons were missing last week's only goalscorer, Ryan Brown, but rallied and put good pressure on the Vipers from the off. The last time these two teams met it was frustrating day for Haverford as they lost 1-nil in a match they should have won.

This time round, however, the Dragons were more than equal to the task, and Lyons got the Dragons' first on a great ball right down the middle of the Vipers' defense. He outran his marker and finished cleanly on the ground.

Chester Valley Levels Terms, Twice

Haverford carried a 1-nil lead into the interval, but it didn't last long after the restart. Greater Chester Valley leveled terms in the first two minutes of the second half on a well taken header off a corner from the right side.

It was a pitched battle through the remainder of the match, with the intensity growing each minute.

Lyons then struck for his second of the match to give the hosts the advantage when he caught the Vipers keeper out of his net with a right-footed effort from about 18 yards.

Chester Valley did not wilt, however, and they started to press the Dragons, making the most of the fact that the side had a full bench and the Dragons did not.

Dragons Save Their Best For Last

Haverford fought well at the back, with Ryan Kelley, Peter Moore, Noah Cordrey and Sean Kauffman as the four defenders. Kauffman was tireless all match, snuffing out Chester Valley's forwards.

Goalkpeer John Kuyat also saved bravely on numerous occassions. Moore, who was playing through a case of strep throat, soldiered on and never quit. And Cordrey proved vital to the Dragons' cause when he cleared the line after Kuyat had done down and could not recover in time to make a follow up save.

With five minutes remaining, the scores were level again through the hard work of the Vipers' attackers.

But Haverford still had one last trick up their sleeves when Lyons found Egelkamp on the right side where he finished cooly from close range just prior to the final whistle.

Dragons Fight Back, Draw Spring Opener

In the end it was a test of heart, displayed in countless ways and none bigger than Peter Moore's clearance off the line in the closing minute, which preserved a deserved draw for the Haverford Dragons.

Gritty defense, timely goalkeeping and opportunistic offense proved enough for Haverford against the visiting Pottsgrove Falcons, who enjoyed an advantage in both size and number.

The Dragons had just one substitute, while Pottsgrove had a full bench. The visitors also had a good supply of taller players, which initially appeared to be the death knell for Haverford.

The scales were seemingly further tipped decisively in Pottsgrove's favor by the absence of the Bradley brothers and Senan Farrelley.

However, the Dragons got stuck in early and never gave up. And Conor Higgins put his stamp on the match by not backing down in the face of a physical challenge.

Pottsgrove's Profligacy Benefits Haverford

Despite their size advantage, Pottsgrove suffered a crucial lack of finishing. They had countless chances to put the match beyond doubt, but failed at the critical moments.

That the Dragons put together such a spirited performance given the changes afoot in the club, was a testimony to Haverford's industry in putting in a total team performance.

And when Ryan Brown pounced on a blocked shot just inside the penalty area in the 16th minute and drove the ball low to the left side of the goal, the advantage to the Dragons was all the sweeter for the fact that it had come against the run of play.

Pottsgrove had been enjoying the lion's share of the possession and had had Haverford pinned in their own end for a considerable amount of time. The Falcons had even jumped ahead through a goal, only to have it called back for off side.

The Dragons' lead lasted just six minutes, when Pottsgrove capitalized on some back line confusion and the ball ended up in the back of Haverford's net following a deflected attempt at a clearance.

Clutch Defending, Fortune Preserve Draw

Three minutes later it was Pottsgrove again netting a goal to go up 2-1 when a player was unmarked just inside the penalty area. Even with the trouble Pottsgrove was having with the finishing touch, it was an opportunity that could not be missed.

The Falcons took a 2-1 lead into the interval and the intensity only increased as the second 35 minutes commenced.

It was the speedy Patrick McCallum who raced onto a through ball in the 37th minute to level terms.

Pottsgrove applied pressure straight away, but it was Haverford who had the best chances following the Dragons' goal. Kevin Toal sent McCallum through on 40 minutes, only to have the keeper rush off his line and disrupt matters.

The final 15 minutes called for all hands to the pump for Haverford as Pottsgrove pushed forward looking for the winning tally. Tired as the Dragons were, they defended in depth and foiled the Falcons. Haverford also benefitted from Pottsgrove missing the mark on three separate occasions.

In goal, John Kuyat had shown bravery from the initial whistle. In the waning moments of the match he did not waver and continued going to ground to stop Pottsgrove's best efforts. He also got the helping hand he needed, as Moore, Ryan Kelley and Noah Cordrey marshalled their efforts to stymie Pottsgrove at the back.

Delco U13 Div.1 Playoffs This Weekend

The Delco U13 Division 1 playoffs are slated for this weekend featuring Council Rock, FC Revolution, LANCO Utd. and Concord Revolution.

Concord will travel to Council Rock in an attempt to avenge the loss inflicted on them in the first week of the season when Council Rock struck for four goals and posted a clean sheet.

LANCO Utd will travel to FC Revolution seeking a reversal of fortune from their loss just last week when Revolution hit three goals and denied LANCO.

Draw Ends Dragons' 2009 Fall Season

The Haverford Dragons ended their 2009 fall season with a draw away to WestMont United yesterday as they fought back from a goal down to end the contest honors even, 1-1.

The Dragons, who topped the league a year ago, knew heading into the match that they would be not playing in the post season, as they were on 10 points in fifth place, and even a victory would have still left them short of the Concord Revolution in fourth position.

Nevertheless, the squad showed grit and determination in the match and did not yield under the weight of conceding the match's opening goal.

Conor Higgins leveled terms in the first half on a shot from distance which the United keeper could not handle.

The only remaining question in the division was whether LANCO United or Council Rock would take the first seed in the playoffs, as they both began play on the weekend possessing 22 points.

The Dragons now shift their attention to the indoor game.

Dragons Beat Radnor, Stay In Playoff Hunt

The Haverford Dragons got clutch goalkeeping from Conor Higgins, who deputized for the missing John Kuyat, as well as solid defending on the back line, and held off Radnor Deportivo 2-nil for a crucial win that keeps Haverford's playoff hopes alive.

It was a different story than a year ago when these two teams drew at nil before the Columbus Day break and then chased one another for top spot in the league. Haverford prevailed in the league, but then fell to Radnor 2-nil in the Championship Match.

Heading into today's match, Haverford was in fifth position on the table and Radnor was closer to the bottom.

But as has been the case this season, league records can be misleading and Haverford knew, as always, that Radnor would be a difficult opponent, especially on its own field.

Higgins Subs In Goal, Earns Clean Sheet

Higgins was pressed into service in short order, as he saved a Radnor direct kick in the first five minutes.

The opening 35 minutes saw few quality chances for each side, as tight marking defensively limited opportunities.

The best scoring chance came on the stroke of halftime, as Radnor countered down the left side and a ball was sent into the middle asking a serious question of the Haverford defense.

The Deportivo striker had slipped in behind the back line and Higgins was forced to charge off his line.

His timing was perfect, and he made a sliding, last-ditch save, smothering the Radnor striker at the 18 yard line.

Toal's Strike Gives Haverford The Edge

It was only five minutes into the second session when Conor Bradley limped off, giving the Dragons some concern in attack.

But Kevin Toal stepped up and took his chance brilliantly to give Haverford the breakthrough.

Toal was opportunistic to take a one-time shot as the ball fell to him after a Radnor player had blocked Noah Cordrey's effort taken just inside the 18.

Toal's strike was perfectly placed in the top corner, though, and Deportivo's keeper had no chance.

After the Dragons drew first blood, they showed even more effort and ambition and quickly won a corner kick a minute later.

Cordrey delivered the corner from the right side but a well-struck ball was headed off the line by a Radnor defender to stayed home at the far post.

The danger had not been cleared, however, and Ryan Kelley's ball served back in resulted in a mad scramble in front of the net, where Patrick McCallum poked in from close range.

Radnor Hit Woodwork, Earn a Caution

Radnor stepped up its attack immediately. Four minutes after going down two goals, they pressed forward and struck the crossbar with a strong shot from around the 18.

The rebound fell invitingly to a Deportivo striker, but his header went out off the post.

Frustration mounted for Radnor and the game grew more physical. A Deportivo midfielder, who had been the team's primary playmaker, earned a yellow card.

Other Radnor players could also have been booked, but none were.

Haverford Close Strongly To Claim 3 Points

The final 20 minutes of the match were a tense affair. But Haverford was equal to the challenge defensively.

To a player, the performances were strong, and the Dragons were determined to preserve the clean sheet.

Vipers Bite, Dragons Lose 2 In As Many Days

Despite a solid history of success against both Concord Revolution and the Greater Chester Valley Vipers, the Haverford Dragons were not able to pick up any points against either side in a second weekend of back-to-back matches.

Unlike last weekend's exhilirating victories against strong, quality opposition, Haverford lacked the spark to take control of this weekend's fixtures; matches from which they certainly expected to take all six available points.

As a result, they came away on the short end of successive 1-nil scorelines.

The lack of spark against Concord may have been attributable to the absence of Conor Bradley and other players being somewhat under the weather.

Dragons' Missed Chances Are The Difference

Against Greater Chester Valley, the Dragons created many chances, but lacked the finishing touch, and were punished for their profligacy when the Vipers struck for the match's only goal eight minutes from time.

Shane Bradley came very close to rescuing a point on the last kick of the game when his injury-time shot was just inches wide, following an inspired run down the left side of the park and into the penalty area.

But Bradley's lack of luck was the story line of the afternoon for Haverford.

Bradley himself had just missed on two other attempts and saw a diving save prevent a third when the Greater Chester Valley keeper reached behind himself to grab the ball just before it crossed the goalline.

Haverford Nearly Manage To Breakthrough

In the first half, other Dragons had their opportunities as well. Noah Cordrey's left-footed effort was saved, and another curled just inches whide of the top corner. Also well saved was a good looking shot from Kevin Toal.

In the 8th minute Patrick McCallum had his goal called back for offside after Cordrey had put him through on goal. Willie Fineberg had two solid shots kept out by the Chester Valley keeper as well.

The Haverford defense was doing its job with great tracking back by Peter Moore, Sean Kauffman, Ryan Kelley, Senan Farrelly, Conor Higgins and Sean O'Connell.

But the Vipers found an opening on 62 minutes, and managed to put the match winner past Dragons keeper John Kuyat when the ball was turned in at the near post following a cross in from the right side.

Concord Seizes Rare Scoring Chance, Match

Against Concord, the decisive play came in the 43rd minute when Concord pounced on a lose ball in their attacking third, and a shot taken quickly was able to elude Kuyat, who got just one glove on the ball as it found the back of the net.

History counted for nothing on the day.

Going all the way back to 2006, meetings between the two teams have held a degree of drama, and Haverford has had the winning edge.

The Dragons won all three matches against Concord in 2006, one in the league season and two in the Delco Columbus Day Tournament.

Each of those three matches had some drama, especially the Championship final of the tournament; a 3-1 Haverford win which included a red card.

Contest Lacks Drama, Favorable Result

In subsequent meetings, Haverford has held the upper hand; the lone exception being the championship match at the 2008 Whitewater Tournament, which Concord took.

The Dragons got the final word in 2008, however, as they beat Concord away three weeks after the Whitewater loss to take the top spot in the league.

Saturday's match was slightly less dramatic, as a boggy start to the match saw few quality scoring chances for either side in the first half.

But in the end, Concord took their chance and the Dragons did not. This week's Columbus Day Tournament may provide just the break from league action Haverford need.

Dragons Get 6 Points From Crucial Weekend

The Haverford Dragons kicked off the first of two weekends featuring back-to-back matches on Saturday Sept. 26 by visiting Lower Merion, in a match which featured two sides in search of their first win.

Haverford, with a draw and a loss, also had a match in hand against Lower Merion which, surprisingly, had dropped their first three matches, each by one goal.

LANCO Utd., Hockessin and F.C. Revolution, respectively, had managed to edge Lower Merion.

The Dragons had a week to think about their loss to LANCO Utd., imagining what they needed to do against Lower Merion to reverse their fortunes thus far in a young season.

Haverford came out firing on all cylinders from the opening tap on Saturday.

The Dragons held the possession early and kept good pressure, which resulted in a penalty against Lower Merion, when Conor Bradley rounded the Lower Merion keeper and earned a penalty kick as he was impeded on his way in.

Brother Shane Bradley stepped up to make sure with the spot kick in the 11th minute; a solid right-footed effort left the Lower Merion keeper stranded.

Dragons' Aggression Makes The Difference

The pressure didn't end there for Haverford, and two minutes after achieving the breakthrough, Patrick McCallum had doubled the Dragons' advantage when he wriggled free at the six-yard box and headed well on a corner kick served in by Noah Cordrey from the right side.

The Dragons were not being pushed around, they got stuck in a great deal more than they had agaisnt LANCO Utd.

In the 21st minute, Ryan Kelley got on the scoresheet when he gathered the ball following a miscue between the Lower Merion left defensive back and the keeper.

As the ball was passed back, it lacked sufficient pace to reach the keeper and as he came out to meet it, Kelley was first to the ball.

He finished cleanly to give Haverford a 3-nil lead.

But Lower Merion had plenty of time, and they kept chipping away at Haverford in search of a way back into the match.

The Haverford defense did its job well.

Haverford Win Tense Battle With L.M.

Despite valiant work at the back, Lower Merion grabbed its first of the match in the 33rd minute when a ball played in past the Haverford defense resulted in a frantic play in front of the Dragons' net.

John Kuyat came off his line to challenge the ball as two Haverford defenders also came together. The ball popped high into the air and sailed goalward.

The ball struck the crossbar and came down in front of the net, where a Lower Merion player was on hand to tap in.

The second half started with Lower Merion showing more spark than Haverford, and in the 48th minute, the Rage drew within one goal of the Dragons with a nice play from the right side.

The intensity of the match mounted, as Lower Merion was gaining confidence with its two goals, and Haverford searched for the tally which would give them breathing space.

Kuyat continued to make quality saves, often going to ground. and Haverford's attackers had several near chances.

Shane Bradley had a long-range effort sail just off the mark, and Conor Higgins nearly found Conor Bradley in the penalty area with a nice lofted pass that was barely claimed Lower Merion's keeper.

The Dragons held on until the final whistle, however to prevail 3-2.

Dragons Hand F.C. Revolution First Loss

On Sunday, undefeated F.C. Revolution came to town, having just beaten previously undefeated Council Rock the day before.

F.C. Revolution took the opening tap and quickly forced a courageous save from Kuyat.

In fact, Kuyat would be pressed into service throughout the match, as F.C. Revolution brought out the very best in him.

Diving and going to ground often, Kuyat was very active for the full 70 minutes.

But as Haverford absorbed early pressure by F.C. Revolution, the Dragons manged to grab the opening goal in the 9th minute courtesy Kevin Toal's strike from the left side.

Kuyat's keeping was brave, but certainly not the only outstanding effort among the Dragons.

As against Lower Merion, Haverford were giving a total team performane against F.C. Revolution. In every area of the pitch, the Dragons were coming to life.

Haverford's Total Team Effort Does The Job

In the 22nd minute, Conor Bradley slotted a nifty pass through to Cordrey, who raced on to it and, having just beaten the F.C. Revolution keeper to it, finished well with his right foot.

Down two goals, F. C. Revolution were not about to back down, and they continued to surge forward.

In the 29th minute, Kuyat came off his line to break up a clear opportunity for F.C. Revolution as their striker was clean through on goal.

The pulsating action showed no sign of abating as a corner by F.C. Revolution in the 34th minute created havoc in the Dragons' goal area.

Kuyat flung himself into the fray and, although he made the initial save, could not hold the ball. It was up to Ryan Brown to clear the line for his fallen keeper.

Clear it Brown did, and the first half ended on that energizing note.

Dragons Hold On, Edge F.C. Revolution

After the interval, F.C. Revolution piled on the pressure, looking to climb back into the match and avoid their first loss of the season.

In the 41st minute they got one back following a consistent assault on the Haverford net.

Two minutes later it appeared F.C. Revolution would level terms, only for Kuyat once again to dive on the ball as the opponents had a break against the run of play.

The entire Dragons team was now pulling together to defend in depth. Each player was incessantly hustling to the ball and clogging passing lanes as best he could.

The tension was growing as Haverford tried desperately to regain a two-goal cushion. The Dragons earned several corner kicks, but it was F.C. Revolution who got the next goal when they took full advantage of a free kick opportunity about 30 yards from goal in the 59th minute.

The ball sailed in just under the crossbar and left Kuyat helpless.

However, Haverford did not wilt. Rather, they marshalled their forces and pressed on for the winning tally.

It came on a header by Conor Bradley as he met a cross from Cordrey in from the right side in the 60th minute.

It was then all hands to the pump as F.C. Revolution sensed the urgency of the moment and threw men forward in attack.

A combination of steady nerves and courageous defending from the Dragons' back line preserved the win, and meant Haverford took the maximum points from a key set of fixtures.

The Haverford Dragons slumped to their first defeat of the season today as a proficient LANCO United side came to town and brought its goalscoring form.

That United hit 5 against the Dragons was disappointing enough, but Haverford's difficulties generating quality scoring chances of their own added to the frustration.

United got the first of its haul on the day in the 11th minute when a throw-in from the right side floated into the penalty area behind the Dragons' back line.

Goalkeeper John Kuyat rushed off his line but a LANCO attacker was a step faster to the ball and, despite a collision which left the United player on the pitch, the ball sailed easily into the net.

United Make It A Long Day For Haverford

Once United were on the scoresheet, they seemed determined to add to their tally, and they did so just three minutes after the first goal.

Smooth passing and teamwork made the difference and a well-weighted through ball sliced through the Dragons' backline where the United attacker took full advantage of his chance.

The second half started more brightly for the Dragons, with Kevin Toal getting nearly putting Conor Higgins in on goal from the left side in the 38th minute.

Haverford's sustained pressure paid off with a corner kick, which Conor Bradley sent in from the left side. The inswinging ball eluded the Dragons in the box, and gell instead to the LANCO keeper.

It appeared Haverford might be on the verge of a breakthrough when the tables turned in the 41st minute and LANCO put the match beyond reach.

The final goal, added five minutes later, only served as a painful reminder that on the day United was having its way.

Dragons Draw With Hockessin In Opener

The Haverford Dragons opened the fall 2009 campaign with a hard-fought draw against Hockessin Lightning in a match which the Dragons will feel unlucky not to have won.

The result is something new for the Dragons, who have historically won their opening matches in previous seasons. But the 2009 version of the Hockessin Lightning is considerably more formidable than the squad from 2006.

That year, Haverford won the regular season fixture and the playoff match between the clubs by a combined 7-1 score.

Saturday's match started somewhat slowly, but Haverford were within a shout of taking the lead in the 4th minute when Conor Bradley saw his right-footed effort sail just wide.

The early pressure belonged to the Dragons and Hockessin were on the back foot.

The Lightning goalkeeper conceded a corner after Conor Higgins made a mazy run and laid the ball off to the right where Ryan Brown sent in a low cross which Conor Bradley again just pushed wide.

The Dragons tried their luck from long range as well, with Conor Bradley and Shane Bradly testing the Hockessin netminder.

Dragons Gain Edge Via Bradley's Strike

The persistent pressure seemed certain to yield the breakthrough for the Dragons, and Brown nearly provided cause for celebration when, in the 12th minute, he beat Hockessin's keeper who had come out to challenge a cross in from the left side just inside the 18 yard line.

Despite beating the keeper, Brown could not control his shot, which sailed just over the crossbar.

Brown had opportunity to make amends for his miss in the 20th minute when Noah Cordrey's corner kick came in from the right side, but Brown was unable to direct his header on the frame.

When Conor Bradley did get the Dragons on the scoreboard, courtesy a right-footed effort in the 39th minute, it was no more than Haverford deserved.

Hockessin Come To Life, Nearly Grab Win

The match was gathering pace and both sides were demonstrating more quality as the match wore on, thus it seemed a one-goal advantage would not be safe.

So it proved in the 48th minute.

Against the run of play, Hockessin showed rare speed through the middle of the park and a through ball was perfectly weighted to the Lightning striker.

His cool finish on the ground was enough to beat Haverford goalkeeper John Kuyat, who had bravely come off his line.

Rejuvenated, Hockessin took the momentum in the match and very nearly grabbed the match-winning tally a minute later.

A mad scramble ensued in the Haverford penalty area as Kuyat, Senan Farrelly and Shane Bradley converged on a Hockessin striker who had used a burst of speed to slip through the Dragons' back line.

Frenzied Finish; Match Ends Honors Even

Fall 2009 Season Gets Underway Tomorrow

The Fall 2009 Delco Soccer League U13 Division 1 season opens tomorrow, with all but one team in the division in action.

Other than WestMont United, which has a bye in the first week, the remaining teams will play, with the Dragons hosting the Hockessin Lightning.

The Dragons will be hoping that past form holds, as Haverford has won both of the two previous meetings of the sides.

Dragons Tune Up For Season Opener

In their final scrimmage prior to the start of the Fall 2009 campaign, the Haverford Dragons put in a solid performance against the HSC U14s last night at Preston Field, coming from a goal down to claim victory 2-1.

Despite trailing at the break, the Dragons did not retreat and continued pressing for an equalizer, which came courtesy a fine build up and finish by Conor Bradley, who caught the keeper out and slotted home.

The Dragons had kept the game within reach through a combination of quality goalkeeping by John Kuyat and valiant defending by a back line of _ among others _ Sean Kaufmann, Senan Farrely, Shane Bradley and Peter Moore.

While the U14s sought to take advantage of a speed advantage, and often got in behind the Dragons’ defenders, the Dragons did not panic.

Kuyat went to ground several times to deny the opponents in the first half, and denied the U14 attack at full stretch on at least one occasion.

When Kuyat was unable to pounce on the ball lat in the first half, Farrely was on hand to make a last ditch tackle which frustrated the U14s even as the goal stood gaping.

The U14s found a second goal more than a little elusive, but the Dragons were able to capitalize on their chances and, using consistent pressure forced a turnover which resulted in the goal which would put their noses in front.

Ryan Brown took possession on the right side of midfield and lofted a pass into the middle where Noah Cordrey met it mid-flight as the U14 keeper rushed out.

Cordrey was a step better and got just enough of a touch to send the ball into the back of the net.

The Dragons now look to Saturday and the opening match with Hockessin Lightning.

Addressing Gettysburg: Dragons Go 2-1

The Gettysburg Battlefield Blast Tournament lived up to its name yesterday as a very physical Cardiff team took the battle mentality seriously and used very physical play to defeat the Haverford Dragons and send them home with a record of 2-1.

Cardiff, who lost in the Championship Match to Great Falls, started brightly with a goal inside the first 6 minutes, and used aggressive tactics to deny Haverford.

The match also suffered from spotty officiating as well as a flurry of yellow cards.

Sunday had started more promisingly for the Dragons when they ran out 5-nil winners against Manheim Township. Despite an early start, Haverford showed ambition with three goals before the break from Ryan Brown, Patrick McCallum and Kevin Toal.

The second half saw Toal add to his total and Noah Cordrey got on the scoresheet as well.

Saturday's match had been a tighter affair as the Dragons were held off the score sheet until the second half by a gritty Forest Hills squad.

It was Brown who made the breakthrough in the 33rd minute poking home from a corner which Forest Hills had failed to clear sufficiently. The victory was sealed roughly 10 minutes from time when McCallum finished very sweetly after making a determined run down the right side.

The Dragons certainly got no more than they deserved with the victory as they had the majority of possession and great chances throughout the match.

New goalkeeper John Kuyat was stretched on a few occassions and saved well those few times when Forest Hills managed a counterattack.

Coach Bradley continued to move players around in formation and, employing a 4-4-2, got solid play out of the entire squad.

Overall, Haverford put in good performances in the two victories but found it hard to fight back from an early deficit to Cardiff.

The Dragons will look to build on those two wins in anticipation of their opening match against Hockessin in just less then two week's time.

2009 Fall Season Opens With Hockessin

The fixtures have been released for the 2009 fall Delco U13 Division 1 season, in which the Dragons will face some familiar opponents as well as a number of new ones.

Haverford begin the campaign Sept. 12 against Hockessin Lightning, a team they have not played since 2006. That year, the Dragons beat the Lightning twice _ once in regular season play and the other time in the first round of the playoffs.

Among the familiar faces in 2009 will be Lower Merion Rage, Concord Revolution, Radnor Deportivo and Spirit United.

New opponents include Lanco United, FC Revolution, Greater Chester Valley, Council Rock and West Mont United.

The last time the Dragons played Lower Merion they beat them in the 2009 EPYSA Indoor State Cup in January by prevailing in the championship match on penalties.

Concord has been a familiar foe throughout the years in league and tournament play. In 2008, Concord bested the Dragons to take the Whitewater Challenge title in the championship match, but Haverford beat Concord in league play to take the top spot in the league.

It was Radnor that Haverford met in the EPYSA 3 championship match last December, falling 2-nil. And it was Spirit United that the Dragons beat in the first round of the playoffs to reach that championship match.

As for the new teams, some are moving up a division, while others are moving down.

Hockessin is moving up from US Clubs 1, as are Greater Chester Valley and West Mont United. FC Revolution, Lower Merion, Council Rock and Lanco United are all moving down from a variety of other divisions.

Dragons Dominate Parkwood J, Win 2-Nil

The Haverford Dragons put together another top flight performance and cruised to victory Sunday over Parkwood J in Spring League action.

Conor Bradley hit two and was very close to completing his hat trick late on.

The margin of victory could easily have been much greater as Danny Lyons was unlucky to have his best effort come back off the crossbar and Sean O’Connell also coming close on two occasions.

Aaron Corr and Willie Fineberg could have added their names to the scoresheet as well, but just missed.

Conor Higgins controlled much of the game, and was seemingly ubiquitous. He shut down the opposition, controlled the tempo and created opportunities out of the midfield.

The back line was stalwart. Shane Bradley, Senan Farrelley and Peter Moore were relentless in protecting the defensive third.

Bradley Fires Dragons To Victory

The Haverford Dragons made amends for Saturday's Cup loss with a tight 1-nil win against Parkwood in Spring League action on Sunday.

The win, which was the result of a penalty converted by Shane Bradley five minutes from time, was no less than Haverford deserved as they had seen a majority of the possession throughout the match.

The Dragons would have felt unlucky not to have claimed a victory given their dominance, and in the end they were able to take full advantage of their opportunity.

Haverford Out Of Cup As Nether Hit 4

The Haverford Dragons clashed with a strong Nether Providence team today in the final match of the group stage for the EPYSA Outdoor Challenge Cup, and came out worse for the wear, as they fell 4-nil.

The loss meant Nether went on to win the group and will advance to the knockout round of the competition.

Going into the match, Haverford knew that the winner would advance, as both Haverford and Nether were on six points from two wins in the group stage.

Nether started the brighter of the two sides and was threatening the goal in short order.

The Haverford back line and goalkeeper J.A Fiorilli had their work cut out for them, and denied Nether on a few occasions, with Senan Farrelley clearing the line with a sliding effort.

The Haverford Dragons went 1-1 in the Robert Urban Memorial Tournament today as soggy conditions eventually forced the directors to abandon proceedings just before Haverford was scheduled to take to the pitch for their final match.

The truncated affair had begun poorly for the Dragons, as driving rain and cold temperatures clearly dampened their ambition against CSSC 97.

J.A. Fiorilli was pressed into service early on, going to the muddy ground a few times in the opening eight minutes.

But there was nothing he could do about CSSC's opening tally in the 10th minute, as a cross in from the left side swung out to the 18 yard line and an unmarked player had plenty of time to hit a quality strike.

Fiorilli Kept Busy In Tournament Opener

CSSC went on to add another goal on the stroke of halftime before putting in a third three minutes after the break.

Conor Bradley got one back for the Dragons in the 40th minute, as he capitalized on a sloppy exchange between CSSC's keeper and one of the defenders.

Bradley's persistence was rewarded as he disrupted the keeper's ability to play the ball at the CSSC 18 yard line, and knocked the ball into the empty goal.

Dragons Put Nether On The Back Foot

The second match of the day, against the Nether Providence AA Blackhawks was an entirely different story from the Haverford perspective.

From the opening tap, the Dragons were aggressive and had Nether on the back foot.

Ryan Brown's great work down the right side resulted in a fine cross which Willie Fineberg was able to latch onto and finish with aplomb in the fifth minute.

Conor Bradley then doubled the Haverford advantage in the 10th minute on a crafty play which slightly resembled his goal from the first match.

Haverford Bounce Back Against Nether

Bradley made a fine cut in from the left side and, as he crossed the 18-yard line, the keeper came out to make the save, missed the ball and fouled Bradley.

Bradley was able to keep his feet, and the ball, which he deposited cooly into the net.

Two minutes later, Brown got one of his own from the right side, and Haverford rode a 3-nil lead into the break.

In the second half, Shane Bradley grabbed two goals, one in the 35th minute, the other 10 minutes later.

Bradley's second goal was a result of fine athletic skill on his part, chasing down a ball which looked to be headed out over the end line for a goal kick. Bradley raced to it and, sliding to meet the ball, struck a fantastic shot into the top near corner.

The Haverford Dragons got their second win in the EPYSA Challenge Cup with a 5-nil performance against Rage United of Lancaster on the strength of a hat-trick by Ryan Brown which moves the Dragons one step closer to advancing out of group play.

The match was dominated by Haverford from the off as they created countless chances and first-half goalkeeper Danny Lyons only touched the ball once, when the ball was played back to him to boot clear. J.A. Fiorilli, who took over in the goal after the break, did not have to touch the ball at all.

The Dragons began brightly as Conor Higgins and Brown teamed up well down the right side and put United under constant pressure. Higgins and Brown both had served several good balls into the box before Noah Cordrey was able to get on the end of one and achieve the breakthrough in the 10th minute.

United Yield Opening Goal, Keep It Close

Cordrey had his initial effort saved, but got another try at it as the rebound came straight to him and all he had to do was tap in from very close range.

The halftime whistle came at just the right time for United, who were fortunate to be down only 1-nil at the break.

But in the second half, Haverford piled on the pressure, through Willie Fineberg as well as Ryan Kelley, Higgins and Chernitsky.

The blustery conditions were causing lofted shots to either sail over the bar, as happened to Kelley, or made crossing into the penalty box very challenging.

In the 40th minute, however, the Dragons' persistence was rewarded when Brown got the first of his three goals on the day, a close-range right-footed shot which eluded the United keeper despite looking less threatening than other shots the keeper had stopped previously.

Goals For The Taking Against United

A clumsy challenge by a United defender in the 43rd minute just outside the Rage penalty area, and to the right side, resulted in a free kick opportunity which was brilliantly taken by Higgins, whose perfectly lofted effort sailed untouched into the far left corner of the United goal.

The goal was deserved as Higgins himself, and the Dragons as a whole, were in complete control of the match at this point.

Chernitsky, Cordrey, Aaron Corr, Fineberg and Kelley all came very close to grabbing goals as the game wore on, but it was Brown who had the fortune of hitting two more, one in the 52nd minute, the other one minute later, to seal the points in dominating fashion.

Dragons Start Cup Campaign With A Win

The Haverford Dragons got their spring campaign off to a quality start with a 2-nil victory over Hunter Tornadoes in the EPYSA Outdoor Challenge Cup today, as Noah Cordrey and Conor Higgins each found the net in the first half.

The Dragons got inspired play as well from both goalkeepers, Danny Lyons and J.A. Fiorilli, who combined to preserve a clean sheet.

The scoring got underway when Higgins dispossessed a Hunte player and sent in a low cross from the left side which was latched onto by Cordrey at the 6-yard box.

Cordrey did just enough to poke it past the Hunter keeper to give Haverford a lead they would not surrender.

Later in the first half, Higgins used a nice piece of individual skill to double the Dragon's advantage. He faked his marker and then unleashed a hard shot from just about 20 yards on the right side.

The Hunter keeper was helpless as the ball found the inside of the far post.

The Dragons defense was pressed into action after the break, but they managed to deny Hunter a way back into the match.

Great defensive teamwork made the difference for Haverford.

Meanwhile, the Dragons came close to extending their lead even further as Ryan Brown, Matthias Chernitsky, Patrick McCallum and Cordrey were unlucky not to have scored in the second half.

Big Saturday Beckons Dragons

The Haverford Dragons are preparing for a full day of action on Jan. 31 in what will amount to split squad action.

One group enters the playoffs in the indoor Starfinder league while another collection of players has won the right to compete in the Futsal State Cup at the US Training Center in Downingtown.

On Jan. 18 Haverford claimed the championship at the West Chester Futsal Tournament, giving them a berth in the state competition.

Meanwhile, the Starfinder contingent will face stiff competition in the likes of Fox Chase, Spirit United and Lower Merion _ just to name a few.

Indoor EPYSA Challenge Cup Champions !

The Haverford Dragons prevailed over Lower Merion Sunday night to win the EPYSA Indoor Challenge Cup 2-0 on penalties in a gruelling contest which capped an exhausting day for the club and brought them another trophy under coach Bradley.

Playing the entire tournament without a full bench, and with Willie Fineberg bravely battling through an intestinal bug, Haverford came from behind in the final match to force extra time, before the match was settled from the penalty spot.

Noah Cordrey and Shane Bradley converted their kicks, and Patrick Hegarty saved Lower Merion’s second shot following a Lower Merion miss.

Lower Merion made the breakthrough in the 5th minute after sustained pressure on the Dragons’ goal paid off.

But it was Cordrey who levelled terms three minutes later with a well-taken right-footed effort placed in the top corner.

Throughout the rest of regulation, Lower Meriod had a slew of chances to regain the lead, forcing dynamic saves from keeper Danny Lyons and various defenders who cleared the line. Senan Farrelly, Shane Bradley and Willie Fineberg were all pressed into action at the back.

Haverford Show Grit, Win Tournament

And Haverford were unlucky late in the match when Conor Bradley could not get his shot off in time to beat the buzzer following a frantic assault on the Lower Merion net.

The championship match was the culmination of a long day of matches in which Haverford won all three of its group contests against Plymouth, Ukranian Nationals and Pottsgrove, which was the only team to take a lead against the Dragons during group play.

In the group stage, the Dragons were able to put together a combination of good agression and pursuit of the ball with goal scoring to carry them into the knockout stage.

In the semi-final Haverford faced a very physical team from Port Richmond, which earned a yellow card, and could easily have seen more. The Dragons showed grit and determination to prevail 2-nil on goals by Hegarty and McCallum.

But the semi-final had clearly taken its toll on the Dragons, and Lower Merion, with a full bench, started the brighter of the two sides in the final match.

But as they had all tournament, Haverford played with great heart and captured the victory.

Haverford Go 1-1 At KIXX Tournament

The Haverford Dragons came away from the KIXX Indoor Tournament Dec. 13 with one win and a loss to finish third, despite having a slew of chances to win its opening match and put themselves in contention for a trophy.

Haverford were extremely unlucky not to have claimed victory in their first match of the day against Winslow, as the Dragons hit the cross bar twice the the uprights six times.

Noah Cordrey’s header, from a perfectly weighted cross sent in by Patrick Hegarty on the right, glanced off the crossbar.

Keeper Danny Lyons made a lunging save at the other end, and the Dragons transitioned right back to offense, only to have Hegarty drive a shot off the upright. It was then Matthias Chernitsky’s turn to hit the post, again off a great pass from Hegarty.

But against the run of play, Winslow took their opportunities well, and jumped to a 3-nil lead in the 12th minute.

Finally, Haverford got something to show for their efforts in the 16th minute when Conor Bradley’s shot hit the net, and then Patrick McCallum followed that with another tally two minutes later.

Dragons On Track, Score 3 In 2d Match

The Haverford Dragons saw their dream of a division championship fall just short Saturday as Radnor Deportivo prevailed 2-nil amidst brutal conditions and claimed the title in the Delco U12 EPYSA 3.

Despite winning the league in the regular season, Haverford was unable to overcome a stifling Radnor defense and the team which had finished second to the Dragons on points during the season emerged the victor.

The wind chills at kick-off were in the 20s, and as the sun retreated, a gripping chill set in for the match.

Brutal Cold Does Not Chill Radnor Attack

Radnor played with a spark which belied the cold, and were quick to the ball throughout. The Dragons started well enough themselves, showing an interest in attacking the Deportivo net early on.

But Haverford's offense, which tallied the most goals on the season, struggled against the league's stingiest defense. Radnor came into the match having conceded only four goals through the season and the first round of the playoffs.

Ryan Brown managed a quality shot in the first seven minutes, but it was a Radnor break against the run of play in the 10th minute which opened the scoring.

Deportivo Take Lead In 10th Minute

The Radnor attacker let fly from distance and saw his shot elude keeper Danny Lyons only to hit the left post. The ball took a fortuitous bounce into the field of play, but in the melee, a second Radnor player was left unmarked to slot home at the right post.

The Dragons repelled numerous other Radnor attacks throughout the first half and conjured up some offense of their own, but shots were in short supply.

Deportivo doubled their lead in the 34th minute, and asserted themselves more fully in the match from there on.

Haverford Struggle, Radnor Take Control

Radnor's fine ball control in their own end resulted in a buildup through the middle of the pitch. From there a Radnor midfielder spotted an attacker in the center and slotted a through ball which split the Dragons' defense.

At that point it was a race to the goal. The Radnor striker got the last touch with a sliding play, and the ball sailed into the back of the net.

Haverford experimented with its lineup and formation throughout the second half, looking for a winning combination.

But on the day, the Dragons' attack mostly misfired and the usual quality chances they had created during the season were absent.

Haverford will now regroup and focus on the KIXX tournament next weekend, as well an indoor action throughout the winter months.

Haverford Head To Final Against Radnor

The Haverford Dragons overcame very inhospitable conditions as well as Spirit United today, 3-2, in the semi-finals of the Delco U12 EPYSA 3 playoffs, earning a berth in the championship match next week against Radnor Deportivo, which downed Tredyffrin Easttown 1-nil on Saturday.

With winds gusting more than 20 miles per hour, and a quagmire on the pitch, Haverford were battling the conditions as much as they were battling United.

And twice the Dragons fought back from down a goal before getting the late winner from Connor Bradley, his second of the match.

Going into the match, Haverford were keen on erasing the memory of the last meeting between the two teams, as Spirit United were the only team to hand the Dragons a loss during the league season.

That loss had come Oct. 18, as Haverford made a sluggish return from the Whitewater Tournament. United had finished the season tied for fourth position on the table and needed a play-off victory over Concord Revolution earlier in the week to earn the right to face the top-seeded Dragons.

Dragons Overcome United, Weather Also

The semi-final, rescheduled due to inclement weather, took place the day which had been slated for the championship match. The title match will now be played Nov. 22.

Against Spirit, Haverford started reasonably well, winning the ball and making a foray into the attacking third, but it was United which struck first.

When keeper Danny Lyons went to ground to gather the loose ball in his penalty area and took down the United attacker, the official signalled a penalty kick, ruling Lyons had played the man and not the ball.

The resulting spot kick was slotted low and to Lyons' left, and United took the lead in the 16th minute.

Despite the ominous opening tally, Haverford did not slink away, and instead went to work. Patrick McCallum's industry down the right side first earned a direct kick, and then a corner when Spirit was unable to reclaim possession and move forward.

Fineberg Pulls One Back, United Not Done

The ensuing corner kick was initially cleared. But Willie Fineberg raced in from his deep lying position and struck the ball first time just inside the 18 yard line.

The ball sailed untouched into the United net and the Dragons were back on terms in the 20th minute.

The Ebb and flow of the match were such that Spirit took the initiative shortly thereafter and caught Haverford somewhat on the back foot.

In the 24th minute, United were back in front, and they rode that lead to the break.

Coach Louie Bradley's halftime talk was forceful, and the team came out well motivated.

Dragons Fight Back A Second Time

As in the first half, Haverford was having slightly more success moving down the right side as opposed to the left, and it was one such play in the 40th minute which brought the Dragons level for the second time in the match.

Patrick Hegarty ran on to a fine through ball from Ryan Brown, and he floated a ball into the penalty area for Connor Bradley. The strike thereafter was solid and sure, putting the Dragons even 2-2.

Having found the equalizer, the Dragons played with considerably more spark and immediately went to work menacing the United defenders and goalkeeper.

The gusting wind was now in Haverford's favor and several balls floated in caused trouble for United's keeper. One ball sent in the air from well outside the 18 yard line was nearly headed in by Noah Cordrey, who came up just a few inches short against the Spirit netminder.

Bradley Nets Late Winner, Defense Holds

Brown and McCallum also had strong efforts well saved by the United keeper. Brown fired a brilliant shot in from the right side that rattled the right post. McCallum's came on strong work down the left side by Ryan Kelley and Conor Higgins.

Kelley's through ball found McCallum, but good positioning by the United keeper enabled him to deny the shot at the near post.

But it was Connor Bradley who got the match winner when another ball served in from the right side fell to him very invitingly. With a touch to settle, he collected himself and found the net in the 58th minute.

The Haverford defense then remained resolute in the final two minutes to deny Spirit's attempts to get back in the match. Senan Farrelly, Shane Bradley, Sean Kauffman and Peter Moore shut the door and preserved the victory.

Dragons Top Division, Head To Playoffs

Despite a slow start, the Haverford Dragons left no doubt and found their form to finish top of the Delco Soccer League U-12 EPYSA 3 for the regular season today with a 2-1 win over visiting Saucon Valley.

The win ensures the Dragons will take top seed into the playoffs next week.

Saucon Valley started with energy and pace, belying their record and position at the bottom of the table.

With just one draw and the rest losses, Haverford may have been tempted to look past their opponent, but Saucon Valley showed that they were serious competition through the opening 30 minutes.

Brown Sets Tone After The Break

Each side had some chances, but the visitors looked the stronger team.

At the break, coach Louie Bradley was less than pleased, and the players took note as they started the second half more brightly than they had the first.

Saucon Valley had the tap to open the second half, and it was Ryan Brown who seized on a rare opportunity.

Straight from the tap, Saucon Valley played the ball back to their central midfielder, but Brown sprinted onto the back pass and stole it.

He played the ball through down the left side to Connor Bradley, and the Dragons took a more attacking posture immediately.

Haverford kept good pressure on Saucon Valley at the beginning of the second half, winning corners and throw-ins in the attacking third.

Dragons Start Second Half With Ambition

It was one foray into the Saucon Valley penalty area on which the Dragons were able to break the deadlock. Haverford showed its ambition and created a swarm in the box, which resulted with both a Dragons player on the ground and a hand ball against the Valley.

Noah Cordrey stepped forward to slot home the spot kick, low to the keeper's left, and give the Dragons a well-deserved advantage in the 38th minute.

But Saucon Valley sprang to life and immediately went on the attack. Two minutes later, they forced Haverford into a bad play and won a direct kick about 20 yards from goal.

Keeper Danny Lyons was unable to do anything about the ensuing play, and Saucon Valley was on level terms.

But the momentum did not stay with the visitors for long. For as lacking as the Dragons' attack had been in the first half, it had clearly taken a major step forward in the second.

More attitude and ambition were on display, and each time the Dragon forwards touched the ball they looked menacing.

Haverford Respond, Take Lead, Win

Patrick McCallum was making repeatedly threatening runs down the right side, and it turned out to be a pivotal moment for the Dragons when he did so again in the 41st minute.

McCallum's low cross was flicked on by Matthias Chernitsky to Connor Bradley who tapped in from extremely close range to put Haverford back on top.

The play resulted in a rarity: a double assist, as McCallum's pass initiated the play and Chernitsky's one-touch pass set up the tally.

Haverford looked to have extended their lead in the 44th minute when more industrious effort by McCallum ended up with the goal in the net, but the referee disallowed the goal, ruling that McCallum had actually kicked the ball while it was in the keeper's grasp.

Nevertheless, the Dragons kept the pressure on right until the end, putting Saucon Valley on the back foot. Consequently, a yellow card was awarded to one of Saucon Valley's players as the intensity and frustration mounted.

Haverford, On Form, Down Concord

When the history of this season is finally written, the Haverford Dragons may well look at this past weekend as the pivotal juncture at which they took the division by the scruff of the neck and stamped their mark on the proceedings.

Haverford's narrow and hard-fought victory over West Chester United vaulted them into top position Saturday, and heading into yesterday's match away to Concord Revolution, the Dragons were looking to extend their lead with a win over the team which had beaten them in the championship match at the Whitewater Tournament Oct. 12.

For their part, Concord sat in fifth position on the table, just out of reach of the playoffs.

The Dragons saw to it that their Whitewater performance was, well, water under the bridge.

Dragons Put Whitewater Behind Them

Now, with one match left in the season before the playoffs, Haverford sits three points clear of Radnor and, if form holds, will enjoy top seed in the playoffs.

The Revolution turned out to be more accomodating hosts than the Dragons had anticipated, surrendering two goals in the first half, although Haverford needed to assert their muscle and ambition to secure all three points with a 2-nil victory.

The Dragons started brightly, but so did Concord, and the majority of play was contested physically in the middle of the park. Even still, Haverford enjoyed good possession and penetrated Concord's back line at times, forcing Concord to track back heavily.

It was consistent pressure which told in the 21st minute when the hard work of Connor Bradley, Matthias Chernitsky and Patrick Hegarty earned the Dragons a corner.

The ball was well served by Bradley and Conor Higgins got to the loose ball first to poke it home and give Haverford the lead.

Chernitsky Catches Concord Keeper Out

Three minutes later is was Chernitsky who tallied on a chip shot to beat the Concord keeper, who had come far off his line.

Haverford's backs were tested throughout the first half, and keeper Danny Lyons was pressed into service on a few occassions, but he saved bravely.

Peter Moore, Ryan Kelley, Shane Bradley, Senan Farrelly and Ryan Brown were stellar in keeping the Concord attack at bay, and the Dragons rode their two-goal lead into the break.

Haverford took the tap to start the second half and they threatened nearly immediately.

The gritty work of Patrick McCallum paid dividends as the Dragons earned several corner kicks in the Concord end.

Dragons Shut Out Concord, Remain Top

As the match wore on, the Revolution pressed forward in search of goals and it left them somewhat exposed at the back. On one such play, the Concord keeper again came off his line and scuffed a clearing attempt straight to Noah Cordrey who was on the right side.

The Revolution were saved by virtue of the fact that the miscue occurred at an acute angle to the goal, and Cordrey's effort sailed just wide of the post and eluded Kevin Toal as well, who was breaking to the far post from the left side.

At the other end, late in the match, Lyons pounced on a ball which was pinging around the area to deny Concord any goals on the day.

The team, as a whole against the Revolution, put together the same effort which had been the difference the day before against West Chester. And with the playoffs looming the Dragons look to have gained form and momentum at just the right time.

The Dragons are pursuing the ball and closing out their opponents' opportunities with discipline and effort with great midfield play from Higgins, Brown and Willie Fineberg.

The final match of the season will see bottom-of-the-table Saucon Valley visiting Haverford, with the Dragons needing only a draw to retain top spot on the table.

Lyons Returns; Crucial Save Seals Win

Despite not being fully healed, Danny Lyons made a timely return to the nets for the Haverford Dragons today, making the stop of the season to keep a clean sheet and preserve a fragile 1-nil lead in the 47th minute against West Chester United; a lead which turned out to be the difference as Haverford picked up another win.

With the Dragons playing two matches this weekend, the team hold their destiny in their own hands, as two wins will launch them into top spot on the Delco U12 EPYSA 3 table with one match left in the season.

With that in mind, the Dragons put together a total team performance in today's match, which, if duplicated on Sunday, will likely see them take the lead in the division.

Lyons was a welcome sight on the touchline prior to the match, and he showed good mobility throughout the contest even though his toe remains less than 100 percent.

West Chester had made a few threatening forays into the Haverford defensive third, and each time Ryan Kelley, Shane Bradley, Peter Moore, Senan Farrelly, Sean Kauffman and Kevin Toal were on hand to track back and defend well.

In the 47th minute, it appeared that United might be able to breach the Dragons' defense, however, as a quick change in possession at the midway line resulted in a break for West Chester. Shane Bradley flew back to challenge and got enough of the ball to slow the attacker.

The United player regained possession, though, and, cutting inside to his left, was able to get a shot away from about 12 yards.

Lyons was managed to palm it away and steer it round the post to concede only a corner

Cordrey's First Gives Haverford Lead

United had not been so fortunate earlier in the match.

In the 24th minute, the Dragons were pressing well and earned a corner kick of their own. The ball was delivered well, but West Chester managed to clear it to the right side.

Patrick Hegarty was on hand and had time to loft a shot in from just outside the 18-yard line. The United keeper parried, but was unable to control and the ball fell to Noah Cordrey, who found the back of the net for the first time this season with a calmly taken right footed volley.

It was a well deserved goal for Haverford, as they had been applying good pressure on United throughout the first half. Patrick McCallum had a nice opportunity which was just barely saved in the 19th minute after he had made a cutting move of his own to force a scrambling save.

Dragons Hold On For Narrow Victory

Connor Bradley himself had a quality chance to increase Haverford's lead, but was unlucky to be denied by the sliding save of West Chester's keeper who had come off his line in the 40th minute.

He also saw his shot from distance sail barely wide of the left post in the 54th minute.

But the Dragons were able to make the narrow lead hold up as every player got stuck in and challenged every ball, never allowing United time and space to develop their attack.

Dragons Topple TE For Crucial Win

Despite the loss through injury of goal keeper Danny Lyons, the Haverford Dragons relied on two stand-in netminders and an overall strong performance from the rest of the team to down top-of-the-table Tredyffrin Easstown Hotspurs, 2-nil on Saturday.

The loss was the first for TE all season and gets the Dragons back to their winning ways in dramatic and significant fashion.

Noah Cordrey and Senan Farrelly took turns deputizing for Lyons, whose broken toe has ruled him out of the last two matches.

Nevertheless, Haverford rallied to support both keepers.
